Sperm donation explained
Nationally-recognized authority on male infertility, Dr. Jeffrey Buch recommends this process should you have medical conditions or treatments that impair fertility. Retrieve cryobanked sperm whenever you and your partner are ready. Sperm can be used for either IUI or IVF treatments depending on sperm count and quality.
Before
At this time, NTMIC Sperm Lab doesn’t preserve samples that test positive for hepatitis and HIV. Before your sample is collected, you must bring results that verify you have tested negative within one week of cryobanking.
Abstain from intercourse or masturbation for at least two to three days (but no more than five days) before donation. Regardless of whether the sample is obtained at home or collected at NTMIC’s onsite collection room, you must schedule an appointment. Please call (972) 616-4477.
During
Sperm may be collected from the comfort of home. To retain optimal motility, please deliver the specimen to the lab within one hour of collection. Although sperm banking is done by appointment only, appointments are made during normal business hours listed on the lab website at www.NTMICspermlab.com . NTMIC Sperm Lab is conveniently located across from Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Frisco, on Warren Parkway near the Dallas Cowboys Headquarters.
The collection room is stocked for your appointment with appropriate visual aids and features a locking door for privacy. Regardless of “where” you donate, don’t use lubricants during the collection process; do use a sterile cup with a screw-on lid or the collection container provided by the lab.
After
Samples are mixed with a cryopreservative solution, then:
- Divided into parts
- Placed in cryovials, marked with donor name, freeze date, and unique numbers
- Slowly cooled
- Frozen in liquid nitrogen tanks
A small amount of semen has been set aside to be thawed and re-tested to verify that sperm motility has been retained through the cryopreservation process. IUI success rates can be impaired if sperm motility has been negatively affected.
