Evaluating sperm samples to determine the cause of infertility in men
At NTMIC Sperm Lab, Dr. Jeffrey Buch and his team assist Frisco, Texas area men with their fertility needs. When patients are experiencing difficulty in conceiving a child naturally, it may be time to have a sperm test performed. Sperm testing, also known as semen analysis, evaluates a semen sample to determine the health and performance of a man’s sperm. The information obtained from an analysis such as this can help couples decide if having a child of their own is in their future!
Why is semen analysis done?
Most men will have an analysis of their sperm completed if they are experiencing infertility and unable to help their partner conceive. Infertility is not always a “woman’s problem.” In fact, we find that about 40% of infertility issues are due to male factors. Our skilled professionals offer an analysis of a patient’s sperm to get the big picture as to why conception is not occurring. What is a semen analysis?
Semen analysis is the evaluation of a man’s sperm to determine the quantity and quality of their semen. There are specific issues that might occur that can make it difficult to impregnate their partner. The number of sperm in millions per milliliter known as the sperm density or sperm count is measured. The percent of moving sperm is calculated and known as motility. The shape or morphology score of the sperm with strict technique is performed to give a numeric predictor of the sperm’s ability to penetrate an egg. With semen analysis, the medical team at NTMIC Sperm Lab has the information to help them better understand the cause of infertility and find the best solution to help conceive a child naturally. Eliminating these obstacles is often the first step to starting or continuing one’s family.
What is determined with a sperm test?
Semen analysis is performed to carefully measure certain factors and variables of the sperm to provide information to the couple regarding their infertility issues. With a sample of a male’s semen, our laboratory can further evaluate the sperm to diagnose various factors that might be making it difficult for a couple to conceive. Below are some of the more common issues that are determined with semen analysis testing:
- Azoospermia – sperm absence
- Teratospermia – morphologically abnormal sperm
- Low semen volume
- Asthenospermia- poor motility
- Oligospermia – low sperm numbers
When our team evaluates sperm and finds any combination of these issues, the results can be used to help couples and their doctor decide the best next steps to helping conceive children naturally.
What to expect during your sperm count test
Men are welcome to bring in a sample of their ejaculation or come to the office to produce a sample. Our team of professionals then evaluates this sample to determine the problem at hand. Before providing a sample, we encourage men to be abstinent for several days, maintain hydration, and avoid consuming alcohol to get the best sample possible for an examination.
